Suboxone is Addictive
Buprenorphine, Suboxone and Subutex are all opiate replacement therapy drugs. When these drugs first came out on the market, they were heralded as a great way for people to overcome heroin and opiate addiction. Unfortunately, Suboxone is addictive.
Suboxone and similar buprenorphine drugs work to block withdrawal symptoms of addictive opiates without the devastating effects from addiction to heroin or other opiates. The problem with this plan was quickly discovered, as now there are thousands of people who are addicted to Suboxone, buprenorphine, methadone, and Subutex.
Suboxone is addictive and many people do experience painful and even dangerous withdrawal symptoms as they try to overcome this drug. On top of that, there are many ways to abuse Suboxone that can be both dangerous and life-threatening.
The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (http://buprenorphine.samhsa.gov/) provides these interesting facts about Suboxone:
- Suboxone is a Schedule III substance. This means that it is less addictive than drugs like cocaine, morphine and OxyContin, but it does cause moderate physical dependence and high psychological dependence.
- Suboxone, Subutex and buprenorphine have been increasingly prescribed. In 2007, over 2 million prescriptions for these drugs were given out in the United States alone.
- While these drugs can help people overcome serious opiate addictions, they are also abused themselves. Buprenorphine and Suboxone drugs have been related to a strong increase in hospital emergency visits in the last three years.
- Suboxone and buprenorphine can lead to an overdose death if used incorrectly or if taken with benzodiazepines like Valium, Xanax or Klonopin.
